The check engine light doesn't mean your car is about to explode. It means a sensor tripped a fault code and stored it in the car's computer. You need to know what the code is before you can know what to do about it.
Solid vs Flashing: This Distinction Matters
A solid check engine light means something triggered a fault, but the car is still running in a managed state. You have time to get it diagnosed — same week, don't ignore it, but you're not in a crisis.
A flashing check engine light means an active misfire. The engine is misfiring right now, which forces raw fuel into the exhaust and can destroy a catalytic converter in a short amount of driving. A catalytic converter on most vehicles costs $800–$2,000. If the light is flashing, don't drive it. Get it diagnosed immediately.
Common Causes, Ranked by How Worried to Be
Low worry:
- Loose or missing gas cap — check this first, it's free, and it causes the EVAP code more often than you'd think
- EVAP system leak (charcoal canister, purge valve) — emissions-related, not an emergency
- Oxygen sensor — affects fuel economy and emissions, not a breakdown risk
Medium worry:
- Mass airflow sensor — rough idle, poor fuel economy, sometimes hesitation on acceleration
- EGR valve — emissions system, can affect performance if left too long
- Spark plugs or ignition coils — if there's a misfire involved, this becomes higher priority
Higher worry:
- Catalytic converter — expensive to replace, often caused by ignoring the above
- Coolant temperature sensor triggering cooling system concerns
- Anything showing as an active misfire
Don't Just Clear the Code
Some shops will clear the code without diagnosing the cause. The light goes off, you feel better, then it comes back 50 miles later. Clearing the code doesn't fix the problem — it just hides it temporarily and resets the readiness monitors, which means your car won't pass inspection until it's driven enough to reset them anyway.
Diagnose first. Fix the cause. Then the light goes off and stays off.
The Mobile Diagnostic Advantage
We bring the equipment to you, run the codes, tell you exactly what's throwing them, and give you a straight read on what it's going to take. No guessing, no upselling things you don't need. If the problem is a $40 sensor, that's what we tell you.
