Can a Mobile Mechanic Fix AC?

Yes. Most AC repairs don't need a lift, which means they're completely doable in your driveway. Recharge, leak detection, compressor replacement, blower motor, blend door actuator — a well-equipped mobile mechanic handles all of it.

In Austin, a broken AC in July isn't an inconvenience. It's a problem.

What a Mobile Mechanic Can Fix

AC recharge. If your system is low on refrigerant — blowing cool but not cold, or cycling on and off — a recharge usually fixes it. Mobile mechanics carry both R-134a and R-1234yf. The job takes 30–45 minutes.

Leak detection. Low refrigerant means there's a leak. A mobile mechanic can run a dye test or electronic leak detection to find it before recharging.

Compressor replacement. The compressor is the heart of the AC system. Replacing it is a real job — 2–3 hours — but it doesn't need a lift. It does need proper tools for refrigerant recovery and recharge, which any serious mobile mechanic will have.

Blend door actuator. If your AC is blowing cold on one side and warm on the other, or it's stuck on one temperature, the actuator is usually the culprit. Accessible from under the dash.

Blower motor. No air coming out at all, or only at certain speeds? That's typically the blower motor or its resistor. Straightforward fix.

Condenser and evaporator. More involved, but still doable mobile on most vehicles.

What Might Need a Shop

AC work that requires major dashboard teardown — replacing an evaporator core deep inside the HVAC box on certain vehicles — is a multi-hour job that's easier with a lift and shop tools. On some vehicles, it's a dealer-only job. But this is the exception, not the rule.

European and Older Vehicles

European vehicles sometimes use proprietary AC diagnostic systems that require manufacturer-specific scan tools — not just a generic OBD reader. If you have a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, or similar, make sure the mechanic has the right equipment before they show up.

We fixed an older European sports car AC that every other mechanic in Austin had told the owner couldn't be fixed. It took more research and more patience than a typical job, but it got done. In the driveway.

One Thing Worth Knowing

Texas summers are long. If your AC is weak in April, it's not going to get better by July — it'll get worse. The refrigerant doesn't replenish itself. If it's low, there's a leak, and that leak is getting bigger.

Don't wait until it's not blowing at all.
