European vehicles need a mechanic who knows them. Not because they're impossible to work on — because doing it wrong is expensive, and the margin for error is smaller than it is on a domestic vehicle.
What Makes Europeans Different
Diagnostic systems. A generic OBD-II reader pulls generic fault codes. It won't pull the manufacturer-specific codes that BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche generate. To properly diagnose a European vehicle, you need brand-specific scan tools. Without them, you're guessing.
Torque specs. BMW in particular uses precision torque and angle specifications. Over-torquing a wheel hub or an oil drain plug on an aluminum block causes real damage. The specs matter and they're different from what you'd find on a domestic truck.
Parts. Some parts don't live at AutoZone. A mechanic who services European vehicles regularly has supplier relationships with OEM and quality aftermarket sources. A mechanic who doesn't will either use the wrong part or make you wait a week.
Electronic systems. Modern BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis have electronics that require coding after certain repairs. Replace a battery on a new BMW without registering it to the car's computer and the charging system behaves incorrectly. These aren't bugs — they're systems that need to be completed properly.

What to Ask Before Booking
Ask if the mechanic has the right scan tool for your vehicle. Ask if they've worked on your specific model before. Ask about parts sourcing. A mechanic who's done this work before will give you straight answers. One who hasn't will hedge.
